Tips for keeping fruits and vegetables fresh

  Banana

Some fruits like bananas emit ethylene gas to ripen themselves. The best way to avoid this is by wrapping the tops of bananas in plastic wrap to reduce the amount of ethylene emitted.

Celery

Celery is one of the vegetables that can quickly go from crunchy to rubbery and tasteless. The best way to store celery is by washing and drying the stalks, wrapping them in aluminum foil with a small opening and keeping them in the fridge.

 Lettuce

To lengthen the shelf life of leafy greens in your fridge, line the fridge drawer with a towel to absorb excess moisture and keep fresh produce crunchy for an extended period.

 Berries

To lengthen the shelf life of berries you can simply soak them in warm water for about 12 seconds to help inhibit mold growth, then completely dry them before storing them in the fridge.

 Potatoes

Potatoes begin to sprout if stored for an extended period of time. The best way is storing them in a cool, dry place, as sunlight and moisture encourage sprouting.

Mushrooms

Keep mushrooms in a paper bag not a plastic one since plastic traps in moisture. Paper allows mushrooms to breathe and moisture to escape. Another storage option is by keeping mushrooms in their original packaging, but poking holes in the plastic wrap for better air circulation.
